The SCAN environmental general election guide

There is a lot of conflicting information and narratives out there. Who to believe? Facts are difficult to dispute, such as the voting records of MPs and political parties. So, we have produced this article with links to that information. For the Plastic Free Swindon campaign, we have written to all local parliamentary candidates to ask for commitments to end plastic pollution. This article provides a simple summary as well as full details for those who want them. ‘Swindon Climate Debate: Action or Extinction?‘ is to be held at New College. Each candidate will be asked what their party’s plan is to deal with climate change, followed by audience questions. Please note that the hustings event at Lydiard Park Academy has been cancelled.

Penhill tree planting

‘Penhill Forum in conjunction with the Penhill Junior Street Reps will be holding a tree plant sometime shortly after St. Valentines Day 2020. This will take place on Minety Road recreation ground, Penhill.  We are adding to trees already there to create a Play Wood. One, which we hope, as it grows children will be able to use. It is being planted on a steep hill, which is no good for play as it is, but holds untold possibilities for exciting ‘urban’ type additions in the future, once the wood is well grown. The First plantings put in on April Fools Day 2016 are doing well.  We hope that this wood, will take a few years to complete and that youngsters will be involved at each planting, although it will be their children that will benefit.  We strongly believe that adults won’t value wildlife unless they have the opportunity to[…]

Peatmoor Community Woodland Open Morning

On Sunday 1 December the volunteers who look after Peatmoor Community Woodland in West Swindon are holding a visitor open morning between 10.30am and 1pm. The area is a rare example of a wet woodland which has been a carbon store for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. As a result, it is a biodiverse and ecologically important site preserved within an urban setting. Volunteers will be demonstrating the ancient art of coppicing – cutting down hazel trees in a fixed rotation to allow them to regenerate over the following seven years.  We’ll also be showing off the equally old technique of hedge laying whereby trees are partially cut and woven into a barrier. The trees will then continue to grow strongly to make the hedge stronger. Please come along to find out more about the history of the copse and see what volunteers have been doing over the last 31[…]

Earth Strike (global climate strike) in Swindon

Over 300 people congregated in Swindon to take part in the first global climate strike aka Earth Strike. Demonstrations taking place in an estimated 185 countries all over the world. People from all walks of life, young and old, came together to demand proper representation from governments, for vital legislation and action to address climate change. Many people feel that they have no choice but to rebel against governments whose actions are deemed to be inept and indicative of care for profit and power over people, animals and planet. These events were planned to coincide with the UN Climate Change Summit in New York on the 23rd September 2019, to pressure world leaders into taking appropriate steps to address climate change. The event in Swindon started in Regent Circus with speeches from organisers and local campaigners / activists. Then over 300 people set off down Princes Street, walking through town[…]

The Time Is Now – collective lobbying event at Parliament

The climate crisis has become more prolific in the news recently aided by the Extinction Rebellion protests. These were followed by the publication of the UK Committee on Climate Change report – which proposed net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – and the UN’s assessment of how quickly we are losing natural ecosystems on which we all depend. You can read more in these articles by the Committee on Climate Change and the UN. According to both sources, ‘transformative changes’ are urgently needed. Those changes are possible but we need everyone to play their part, including governments around the world. So here’s one thing we can all do: ask our MP to support the proposals of the Committee on Climate Change for a zero carbon UK. On 26th June some of us will be going to Westminster to meet our MPs. Do join us! You can register through the[…]
